Flying with COVID-19

I will not be flying at all. I've already canceled my flight for our coast to coast move and we will be driving. That being said, I don't fly anytime during the winter months anymore because it never fails and one of my kids gets sick. Right now, March 7, 2020, states like Washington are shutting cities down and quarantining people that have been within 6 feet of an infected person for more than 10 minutes. They are using medical detectives to track back where the infected people have been and contacting those they might have had contact with. As you read some of this you may be thinking, this chick is crazy--but these are the things that need to be done to not get ill. Who cares if people stare at you with a mask on--you're smarter than they are.


My tips for if you MUST fly


Before hand:

  • Boost the immune system with supplements. Most importantly, boost your immune system. Read this post for details on how we effectively do this with supplements.

  • Get enough sleep. 7+ hours a night really helps keep our bodies healthy

  • Get sunlight. Along with the immune boosting supplements I discuss, getting enough natural vitamin D is very important.

  • Buy all necessities for cleaning while traveling like alcohol prep pads, lysol wipes, alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Or can have a TSA approved small bottle of hydrogen peroxide (HP) and napkins. HP has been approved by the EPA to kill COIVD-19 and is a healthier option than bleach. Read my post on that here.

While traveling:

Keep in mind, a sneeze can travel up to 26 feet. A cough can travel up to 19 feet. I've seen kids and adult both not cover a sneeze or cough or use their hands and then touch objects.

  • Mask. Put on a mask before you enter the airport and don't take it off, not even to take a sip of water. If you have a long flight, I still would recommend not removing it for any reason. Masks like N99 rated aren't 100% protection but it's a lot better than nothing at all. Yes the CDC recommends not wearing a mask and has flyers that say, "stay calm and wash your hands". Do you know why that it?! Because there are no masks. They are all sold out and even the healthcare industry can't get them. N95 masks filter up to 0.3 microns. M99 masks filter up to 0.1 microns. Most viruses range from 0.004 to 0.1 microns and we currently don't know what size the coronavirus is. To top it all off two of the major reusable masks are sold out so I kept searching and found a local company called RZ masks. There masks are .1 micron rated and if you're just using it to walk around the city, it should last about 50-60 hours. RZAIR gives you 15% off.

  • Neck up Don't touch anything above your neck. Germs can enter your ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. Also be cognizant of what you're touching.

  • Washing Hands Wash your hands often and keep hand sanitizer on you at all times and use after touching anything that isn't yours.

  • Electronics. Keep alcohol prep pads on you and use them often. Wipe down phones, headphones, tablets, laptops.

  • Plane- Planes are petri dishes for germs. Who wipes them down besides maybe the person that was sitting there before you. Wipe down table, windows, seat, and overhead buttons with Lysol to go wipes or HP and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes before wiping it away. Try to not use bathroom on plane. Don't take snacks or drinks from flight attendant.

  • When you arrive at your destination. Wipe down all luggage and bags and electronics with alcohol. Spray down luggage with peroxide and allow to dry outside of the hotel or home. Remove all clothes and wash or place in plastic bag. Take a shower.
